What Legacy Do You Want to Live?

What do you want other people to remember about your life? In other words, what is the legacy you want to live? In this article, you are going to discover how to live a legacy.

Do you want to serve the poorest of the poor like Mother Theresa? Are you willing to stand up for those who have no voice like Nelson Mandela who ended the racial injustice in South Africa? Or do you want to become the next Steve Jobs who invents a new revolutionary product that will change the way we interact with each other?

Why Am I Here?

If you ask this question, you are not alone.

“Why was I born? Was it only to have trouble and sorrow, to end my life in disgrace?”
Jeremiah 20:18

Before talking about the impact we want to have or, in other words, the difference we dream of, we need to look at the inside of us.

It starts with God, who is living on the inside of us.

When I read Rick Warren’s best-selling book, The Purpose Driven Life, I found life’s three most important questions.

Question of existence: Why am I alive?
Question of significance: Does my life matter?
Question of intention: What is my purpose?

The purpose of life is far greater than your fulfillment, your happiness, and achieving your dreams. It’s not to acquire power, prestige, and money.

You can have a lot of success and still feel empty on the inside of you.

A life without purpose is not worth living. It’s pointless.

As a teenager, I knew my purpose. Or at least I thought what it was. I wanted to become a Swiss Air Force Pilot and then a commercial pilot a Swiss International Airlines. I did pre-airforce flight training.

1. Why Am I Alive?

The first question we need to ask is the question of existence.

“Long before [God] laid down dearth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us at the focus of his love…”
Ephesians 1:4

Before God thought of the universe, he thought of you. That’s how much God loves you. He made you for one reason:

To show you his extravagant love.

Answer to Question 1: God created me to love me

2. Does My Life Matter?

What about the significance? God created us for meaning. Without purpose, life seems trivial and meaningless. Significance is much more than power, prestige, and money.

God cared about you even before you were born.

“I am your creator. You were in my care even before you were born.”
Isaiah 44:2a

That is how much you matter to God. He cared about you. You are not an accident. God wanted you, even if your parents did not plan you. You are not an accident.

God is interested in every detail of your life.

Answer to Question 2: I matter to God

Before we move to the question of intention, our purpose, we need to look at yet another aspect.

“His plans endure forever; his purposes last eternally.”
Psalm 33:11

Life is preparation for eternity. That is the meaning of life on earth. God put you on earth to prepare you for what you are going to in eternity.

God made me last forever.

In other words, this life is not all there is. It’s just the opening act — the warm-up.

3. What Is My Purpose?

If God’s purposes are going to last forever, what am I supposed to do? Why am I here on earth before getting into eternity?

You have to go to the creator to find your purpose. Likewise, with any kind of invention, you have to ask the inventor for what application he made. Hence, ask your creator to find your mission.

“For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible… everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.”
Colossians 1:16

Answer to question 3: I find my purpose in God

Start Living Your Legacy

Your purpose is different from mine. If you want to know it, you have to get to know God.

Life is all about God. It’s not about you.

I thought I would become a pilot. I renounced to that carrier. I went to study chemical engineering. I then worked in the pharmaceutical industry and did a Ph.D. in biology. Along with this process, I discovered I had a heart for justice. It breaks my heart to see people lacking a good education. That is why I initiated an education program in Cambodia.

What is the thing that makes your heart beat faster?

Do you want to live a legacy that will have an eternal impact? Take some time to think and pray about your purpose. And start living your legacy now.
