We Can Find Hope During the COVID-19 Pandemic — Despite Social Distancing
The coronavirus (COVID-19) wave has all hit us hard. Who would have thought that such a crisis would happen soon? In a few days, much of what we call normal has changed. We had to say no to handshakes, physical touch, and kisses on the cheek — as we do in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.
How can we find hope, as single women and men, when we have to stay home because of the lockdown, or when we have to apply with the rules of social distancing?
People fear to lose their job. In Cambodia, where I live, many uneducated people fear to lose their life because of the disease. You may worry about getting crazy in the next weeks because you cannot meet your loved ones anymore. It is hard — very hard.
But there is hope.
There Is Still Hope
Swiss light artist Gerry Hofstetter sent messages of hope this week by projecting ‘#hope’ over the colors of the Swiss Flag on the iconic 4,478-meter-high Matterhorn mountain. What a powerful way he chose to remind the Swiss that there is still hope.
Jesus also sent ‘#hope’ to his followers.
When Jesus and the disciples crossed the lake, a violent storm hit them.
And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. — Mark 4:37
They did not expect it. Neither did we see the global pandemic coming. The disciples became terrified, and in desperation, they tried to prevent the shipwreck. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciplined screamed: “Wake up, Jesus, we’re going to die!” And this is how Mark told the end of the story.
And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” — Mark 4:39-40
When we have trust, the hope comes back. To develop your faith, you need to remind you what God said. In other words, you have to hold on to God’s steadfast promises. They still stand today as we are facing COVID-19.
6 Promises Giving You Hope
I want to give you my best-of list. These six Bible verses I found inspiring and resonated with me during all uncertainty related due to all the changes the pandemic brought about.
1. God is with you
[Jesus said:] “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
2. God protects you
“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
3. God goes before you
It is the LORD who goes before you.
4. God gives you joy
When anxiety was great within me,
your consolation brought me joy.
5. Even when nobody is there, God listens and answers you
Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
6. God will never forsake you
He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.
Mediate these sensational promises every day. And you will see how you will find hope amidst social distancing, fear of an economic downturn, isolation, and losing loved ones.
Let Us Pray for Protection
Let us pray for protection — protection of our health and protection of our mind — so that the virus of fear will not infect us nor spread to the people surrounding us. Also, let us be smart and follow the hygiene rules to protect vulnerable people and ourselves.
